Star TSP654II Linerless Setup Guide

Complete setup guide for Star TSP654II series linerless printers. Load rolls, configure settings, and optimise print quality.

10 minutes Easy Models: TSP654II, TSP654IIBI, TSP654IIC

Setup Steps

  1. 1

    Prepare the printer

Power off the printer and open the paper cover by pressing the cover release button on the right side of the printer.

Tip: Ensure the printer is on a stable, level surface before loading paper.

  2. 2

    Install the linerless roll

Place the linerless roll in the paper holder with the thermal side facing up (towards the print head). The paper should feed from the bottom of the roll.

Warning: Do not touch the thermal print head directly—oils from skin can damage print quality.

  3. 3

    Thread the paper

Pull the leading edge of the paper over the platen roller. Close the paper cover firmly until it clicks into place.

Tip: Leave about 5cm of paper extending beyond the cutter for the initial feed.

  4. 4

    Configure paper width

Access the printer's DIP switch settings or use Star's configuration utility to set the correct paper width (58mm, 80mm, etc.).

  5. 5

    Set linerless mode

Enable linerless mode in the printer settings. This activates the linerless-specific cutter timing and sensor calibration.

Tip: Refer to your printer's manual for the specific DIP switch configuration.

  6. 6

    Calibrate the sensor

Run the automatic paper sensor calibration. Power cycle the printer while holding the feed button to enter calibration mode.

  7. 7

    Test print

Print a test page to verify alignment, print quality, and correct paper cutting. Adjust density settings if needed.

Troubleshooting

Paper jams frequently

Solution: Clean the platen roller and cutter blade with isopropyl alcohol. Ensure the paper width setting matches your roll width.

Labels sticking to the cutter

Solution: The cutter blade may need cleaning. Apply a small amount of silicone lubricant to the blade surface.

Faint or uneven printing

Solution: Increase print density in settings. If problem persists, the print head may need cleaning or replacement.

Paper not feeding correctly

Solution: Check that the roll is installed with the correct side facing up. Thermal side should face the print head.

Frequently Asked Questions

What roll widths does the TSP654II support?
The TSP654II supports 58mm, 80mm, and 83mm roll widths. Check your specific model for supported configurations.
How often should I clean the printer?
For optimal performance, clean the print head and platen roller weekly in high-volume environments, or monthly for lighter use.
Can I use standard thermal paper in linerless mode?
No, linerless mode is specifically calibrated for linerless paper with adhesive coating. Using standard paper may cause jams or poor cut quality.
